What We Do
Wigan STEAM is a creative organisation that aims to nurture creativity in people of all ages and backgrounds through exhibitions, workshops, creative projects, and a community makerspace. We provide high quality cultural experiences, creative learning opportunities and enriching social spaces to enable people to develop the skills that they need in order to lead rich, fulfilling and empowered lives.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and maths. What the STEAM approach means is a continuous discussion between educators, artists, makers, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, technologists, and other humans. As a general overview, STEAM is an educational approach that combines science, technology, engineering and maths with the arts, following the belief that STEM subjects are vital in today’s society, but that it is a mixture of these subjects with the arts that promotes creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.
Built on the 7 C’s of learning developed by Guy Claxton and Bill Lucas – confidence, curiosity, collaboration, communication, creativity, commitment and craftsmanship – Wigan STEAM aims to equip people with the creative resilience and digital capacities that they need to navigate today’s changing world with confidence and competence, and to have the critical thinking skills to adapt, respond and innovate throughout their lives.
