Michael Beigel is a Theatre Director, Dramaturg, Digital Maker and Engagement Facilitator based in the North West. He is associate artist at Mind the Gap and previous work includes shows and engagement work for Action Transport Theatre, The Lyric Theatre, Belfast, Theatr Clwyd and The Barbican. Before training in theatre he gained a degree in Music and Pure Mathematics and all of these disciplines are present in his practice. His work focuses on community engaged new-writing that shines a light on marginalised members of society, and digital play that challenges the form of games and theatre and engagement work that offers opportunities to people who don’t otherwise get a chance to engage with making. His practice marries his love for theatre and his desire to be innovative with form. It focuses on giving diverse groups of people an opportunity for new experiences that teach them the practical skills required for the next stages of their development.
During the residency Michael will develop an Escape Room based on the GCSE Maths paper. It will be an interactive, thrilling event that also teaches some of the principles of mathematics. It will be tactile and robust and will contain locked cases, safes with codes to crack, chains and padlocks. It will be an exciting, fun event targeted at the students who are most in need of support.
He will be exploring whether there will be narrative and performers/facilitators and developing his ideas into working puzzles and a functioning prototype that students and audiences can attempt. It will not be anything like any maths lesson anyone has done before and under everything it is also a way of communicating that maths is a challenge and puzzle there to be solved. It will help people to develop the skills to think creatively, solve clues and essentially, answer questions. This memorable event will hopefully help to make some of the maths and skills more easily recalled and therefore, more likely to stick in the long run.
